Andrew Downing, a design engineer at Stiltz Home Lifts, shares insights into his role refining home lift designs, testing prototypes, and thriving in Stiltz’s dynamic and innovative culture.
National Careers Week 2020 – A Design Engineer Role at Stiltz Home Lifts
Continuing with this week’s theme of National Careers Week 2020, we are now looking at the role of an engineer within Stiltz Home Lifts. In engineering, there are so many different career directions you can choose from: mechanical, technical, electrical, design, civil, structural, plus many more.
We have interviewed Andrew Downing, a design engineer, based at our Kingswinford Head Office, to delve a little deeper into what his job entails.
Previously Andrew worked as an architectural technician designing houses and moving on to work as a mechanical engineer designing passenger lifts. After 10 years Andrew was looking for a new challenge and a role that combined what he has been working on previously, “Stiltz looked like an interesting and fast-growing company where I could utilise and develop the skills and knowledge I had gained in my previous roles.” said Andrew.
“Here at Stiltz, we have a full team of technical and design engineers who are constantly working on improving and developing our current products and researching new potential products”. What does a design engineer do? “I spend my time developing and refining our existing home lift products to improve their quality and to try and reduce costs to both the business and customers. I design new products, build them and test the prototypes. If all goes well, I also produce CAD drawings to issue for when the lifts move to the manufacturing process” explains Andrew.
