Every July, Good Care Month recognises the people who make a difference through care and support. While it’s best known for recognising professional care workers, family members, friends and neighbours also provide an enormous amount of everyday support that can go unnoticed.

Many wouldn’t describe themselves as carers. They’re helping an ageing parent prepare meals, supporting a partner whose mobility has changed, assisting a child with additional needs or popping in to check a neighbour is managing on their own. To them, it’s simply what families and friends do.

According to Carers UK, around 5.8 million people provide unpaid support for a family member, friend or neighbour who is older, disabled or living with an illness. While professional care workers play a vital role, these everyday acts of support help thousands of people remain safe and comfortable at home.

When Little Things Become Bigger

Supporting someone you love rarely changes overnight.

It might begin with helping with the shopping, putting the bins out or walking alongside them on the stairs. Before long, those little acts of support become part of everyday life.

Bonnie’s Story
